Product description

African black soap, also known as Alata Samina in Ghana, is a traditional black soap made with plant ash from ingredients including cocoa pods and plantain skins. Our version continues the same craft with plantain, cocoa, roasted palm leaves, coconut oil and unrefined shea butter, just as women in Ghanaian villages have made it for generations.

Black soap provides a gentle yet powerful cleanse that removes dirt and excess sebum without leaving the skin feeling tight. Many people value it when they want to cleanse deeply while using a soap that feels balanced on the face, body and scalp. It can feel slightly rough at first, but it softens quickly in your hands and creates a gentle lather.

Like shea butter, it also has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. That is why it is so often mentioned when people talk about a more even skin tone, calmer skin and fewer breakouts.

How to use it
Break off a small piece, wet your hands and rub it into a gentle lather. Massage onto the face, body or scalp and rinse thoroughly. Keep it dry between uses, preferably on a draining soap dish, so it lasts longer.

A tip
Black soap is powerful. If you begin too intensely, your skin may react with an initial cleansing period. Start a few times per week, observe how your skin responds and increase gradually.

Buying a piece of black soap from us also means that the women who make it receive income and stability. That is really the whole purpose.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know

01 What is African black soap good for?
African black soap has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It is gentle but cleanses deeply, making it a favourite for:
  • Acne and blemishes
  • Oily or combination skin
  • Dandruff and an itchy scalp
  • Hyperpigmentation
Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.
02 Does it work for sensitive or dry skin?
Yes, but begin carefully. Black soap is effective and can feel strong when your skin is not used to it. Use it a few times per week at first, listen to your skin and increase gradually.
Tip: always follow with our shea butter after cleansing. Black soap cleanses; shea butter restores.
03 How do I use African black soap?
Break off a small piece, wet your hands and rub it into a gentle lather. Massage onto the face, body or scalp, then rinse thoroughly.

04 How often can I use it?
Start two or three times per week. Once your skin has adjusted, you can use it daily, in the morning or evening.
05 How should I store it?
Keep the soap dry between uses on a draining soap dish. Store the unused portion in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture.
